The newest season of Doctor Who starts on April 12 with the episode “The Robot Revolution.” After last season only earned lukewarm reviews, it is vital that Season 2 starts with a bang, reminding fans that the show can be fun, scary, and absolutely enrapturing. But how exactly does one go about doing that?

There are a few things any good season opener needs. It should have an interesting plotline, make the audience care about and root for any new characters, and tease the themes or overarching direction of the season’s plot. On Doctor Who, it should also have at least one “I am the Doctor” moment and/or prove why a new character deserves to be a companion.

With that in mind, we’re looking back at every season premiere since Doctor Who returned in 2005, ranking them on how well they work as first episodes and the quality of the episodes themselves. We can only hope that “The Robot Revolution” earns a place among episodes at the top of the list, not the bottom.
