After being defeated in "The End of Time," the Master didn't appear again until Series 8, where the now-female version of the character made a habit of toying with the Twelfth Doctor. Unlike her predecessors, the female Master (Missy) frequently switched sides, truly believing herself to be the Doctor's friend as much as she was his enemy.
Missy has by far the highest number of appearances in modern Doctor Who, appearing in 15 episodes as well as earning her own audio drama series. She also has the highest number of total stories, beating out Anthony Ainley for the highest number of distinct adventures in the history of the show. Her televised appearances include:
