9. "Marco Polo"
I'd love to include a good reason for this story to be higher up the list. In my ranking of which ten missing stories I'd love to see completed, "Marco Polo" was number 2.
This is less because the story is a massive favorite already and more that there's something clearly missing from the lack of a visual element. I've enjoyed the story on audio, but not as much as many other Hartnell stories.
And yet, this story is unlikely to be animated for the very reason why I want to see it at all - the original production was so good that it'd be extremely expensive to adapt to animation. "Marco Polo" isn't like "The Aztecs" from the same season - it's not set almost entirely at one location.
Instead, it's an epic journey, stretching from the Himalayas to Cathay. It's a story that features many characters and many locations, and everything about the production of the story promises a true epic. (At least, as epic as the BBC budget could allow at the time.) It's a story that would be amazing to see.
And yet, without the budget that it deserves, I don't see it being brought to life via animation. Like "The Crusade", perhaps the best we can hope for is a photo reconstruction. A heavily edited reconstruction of the story was included as part of "The Beginning" DVD box set at least, and it's honestly a good one. When Season 1 is finally released on Blu-ray, perhaps we can hope for a full-length reconstruction this time.
