Doctor Who history: Beyond the console room - the stories that explored the TARDIS

The TARDIS has been a core part of Doctor Who for decades, but the instances where we got to see beyond the console room are surprisingly rare. We take a look at the stories that go deeper into the Doctor’s beloved ship, and how well they explored it.

No matter how much the show changes, one constant in Doctor Who over the decades is their most faithful companion - the TARDIS. While it may change as much as its longest-serving occupant, it’s also essentially remained the same - a safe and familiar home for fans to return to in between the Doctor’s many adventures.

And yet, for a ship known to be bigger on the inside, we’ve seen surprisingly little of it over the past six decades. While the console room has appeared in most stories, we’ve rarely gone beyond it. So when we do get to see the other rooms, such as a companion’s room, a swimming pool, or even the very heart of the ship, it stands out.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, we actually did get to see more of the TARDIS in the show’s very first season. At this point, everything was still brand new and exciting for both the audience and the production team, so as a result, we got to see a little more of the ship in its earliest episodes.
