2. The Evil of the Daleks - All except Episode 2
When I first listened to the surviving soundtrack of The Evil of the Daleks, I was surprised that it didn't quite grab me in the same way that The Daleks' Master Plan did. There are some stories that you can still enjoy with just the surviving soundtrack and adequate narration, but The Evil of the Daleks wasn't one of them.
Watching the single surviving episode of the serial, it was easy to see why I hadn't enjoyed it before. Don't get me wrong, David Whitaker's story is an excellent one, full of great memorable characters like Edward Waterfield and Theodore Maxtible - both helping the Daleks, but for completely different reasons. The visual of the Daleks in Victorian England is also a brilliant one to see.
But that's the key issue - visuals. The Evil of the Daleks is an extremely visual story, perhaps moreso than many other examples on this list. While none of the stories were meant to be enjoyed as audio only experiences, you definitely get the sense that something vital is missing when listening to the soundtrack of Evil.
The full animation of this story did help to fix this issue. It was a joy to finally see moments like the Daleks playing trains or the introduction of the Dalek Emperor brought to life. But it's still a story that I'd love to see in its full original version.
