6. The Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve - All episodes

Unlike previous stories in this list, The Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve - often shortened to The Massacre - is entirely missing. But, like all other missing episodes, the audio of the story still exists thanks entirely to fan recordings. Last year, I listened to this story for only the second time, and I was amazed to discover how shockingly dark and dramatic it was.

The Massacre very quickly establishes a feeling of doom and dread, as both the main characters and the audience are made aware of a horrific act of mob violence that will result in the deaths of thousands.

The First Doctor and his companion Steven are quickly separated, and Steven finds himself involved in a conspiracy. Meanwhile, the Doctor seems to be in disguise as the Abbot of Amboise - but is everything as it seems?

The ending is unsurprisingly downbeat and leads to an incredibly dramatic confrontation between Steven and the Doctor. Just hearing all this drama unfold leaves a huge impression, and I can't help but feel that watching the story would be even more impactful. Some stories I've included on this list due to their importance of the show. But this is one that I've included simply because it's a great story that deserves to be seen.
