8. The Crusade - Episodes 2 and 4
On the plus side, two of the four episodes of The Crusade survive, so this is one incomplete serial that we have a strong idea of. Of course, having seen those surviving episodes, it only further highlights how disappointing it is that we're unable to watch the other half.
Like many of the best historical stories, the production is strong and convincingly brings the historical period to life. We're also given a story that's high on drama, as the serial focuses on the English crusaders as much as on the Saracens, and the audience is given many excellent performances throughout.
Julian Glover's performance as King Richard is definitely a real highlight, as he completely throws himself into the role. But honestly, that's true of everyone in this story. Throw in a script that's filled with not just war but also tragedy, with both opposing rulers making plans for peace - plans that are doomed to fail - and you've got yourself a really solid story.
A surprisingly effective reconstruction of the remaining episodes was included on the Blu-ray box set for Season 2. But as good as it is, it only highlights further how much of a shame it is that the story is incomplete.
