There is a reason Rory Williams (portrayed by Arthur Darvill) was ranked by one publication as fourth best Doctor Who companion, along with his wife Amy Pond. In fandom circles, he's often the top pick for boyfriend due to his kindness, loyalty, and character growth. But there are pros and cons to being his Valentine, beyond the fact that he is quite unfortunately fictional.
Pro: He's a kindhearted soul
One of my favorite Rory scenes is when he's expressing excitement over the speech progress of one of his pediatric patients. He's a good nurse, and it's plain to see he cares about his patients. He also hesitates to use violence, even if he knows an old woman is an alien in disguise.
Con: He's a little lost sometimes
The transition from timid, bewildered nurse to dashing, in-control, time traveler was a hard one for Rory, and sometimes he still gets overwhelmed by new experiences especially when the Doctor and Amy's shenanigans have him being hunted inside a robot replica of his wife or shutting Hitler in a cupboard.
Pro: He's down-to-earth
On the flip side of being a little lost, he does take most things in remarkably good stride. One of my other favorite scenes is during the wedding of the Doctor and River Song when Amy lets him in on how everyone is related and he just says "Okay".
Con: he's constantly dying
Rory Williams is so famous for constantly dying, there have been articles written about his many deaths and resurrections. I personally think the most heartbreaking one was when he fell into a crack in time and Amy forgot him for almost a whole season, but his final episode is a close second.
Pro: he's infinitely patient and loyal
With the advantage of now being an auton, Rory "The Last Centurion" famously waits 2,000 years for Amy to return to him alive and guards her the whole time (and he looks good doing it). The events that made him a legend were ultimately out of love for his fiancee.
Con: he never thinks he's good enough
Rory spends an unfortunate amount of time thinking Amy loves the Doctor over him, and I can't help but think that was partially a result of how humble he is. He knows he's "just" Rory, her longtime sweetheart and friend, and the only thing he has to offer her is his heart.
Pro: he's a good man and a good dad
One of the best parts of Doctor Who: LOCKDOWN was the short film of Rory recounting his adventures to his and Amy's new baby boy. He has some wise things to share, and it's amazing to see how much he's grown as a person since we last saw him on the show.
Even though we ultimately ship him with Amy, Rory Williams proves time and time again that the pros outweigh the cons and he'd make the best fictional boyfriend.
