For fans of the renegade Time Lord, the new Doctor Who anthology I Am The Master – focusing on six different incarnations of the character – has been released!

It’s strange to think that we’re less than two months away from the fiftieth anniversary of Doctor Who’s greatest villain. Originally introduced back in 1971, the Master has always been a perfect opponent to the Doctor. Not only are they both Time Lords and share a similarly high level of intelligence, but they also share a long history, too – one that predates their on-screen encounters, in fact.

With such a landmark anniversary coming up, it’s not surprising that BBC Books have published a brand new anthology focusing on the character. While Sacha Dhawan’s relatively new incarnation features on the cover, Doctor Who: I Am The Master – Legends of the Renegade Time Lord features several different incarnations of the villain from both the Classic and New Series.

This isn’t the first short story anthology that BBC Books has released focusing on one character. They’ve previously released anthologies featuring River Song, Ashildr from Series 9, and even Missy! But it is nice to see an anthology that – while technically still focused on just one character – explores different interpretations of them, while also embracing the full history of the show.

The incarnations originally portrayed by Michelle Gomez and John Simm are just two of the incarnations that feature in this anthology.

Six Masters, six stories

This collection features the writing talents of Peter Anghelides, Mark Wright, Mike Tucker, Beverly Sanford, Matthew Sweet, and Jac Rayner, all of which have written licensed Doctor Who fiction before. But what stories do they give us in I Am The Master?  Here’s the official description:

"The Doctor and the Master; their conflict of light and dark has spanned many times and faces across the universe. This collection – of five short stories and a novella – explores the depths of darkness in the Master’s hearts; the arch-schemer’s secrets and sinister ambitions revealed through brand new adventures and encounters.Join six incarnations of evil for undreamed of adventures: a quest to free alien warlords… a dangerous mission to save a vital ally… a meeting with Bram Stoker… a shattering of lives on a distant world… a trial of wits to gain untold power… and drop in on the Master’s latest incarnation during his 77 years of imprisonment on Earth."

This sounds like an intriguing mix of stories, and certainly a must-read for this Master fan. Expect reviews on each of the stories over the next couple of weeks.
