The Fifth Doctor and Leela have to stop two very powerful and very familiar sisters in the latest Doctor Who box set, Wicked Sisters.

Doctor Who: Wicked Sisters is a box set that I’ve been looking forward to for quite a while. Announced back in AprilWicked Sisters stars Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Louise Jameson as Leela, Ciara Janson as Abby, and Laura Doddington as Zara. If you’re unfamiliar with those last two characters, here’s a quick recap on why they’re so important.

Abby and Zara originally appeared in the Key2Time trilogy back in 2009. They were created by a powerful force called the Grace and given powers to help track down the missing pieces of the Key to Time. While initially, one was a companion to the Doctor and the other was an enemy, they eventually joined forces and went to live separate lives.

They were eventually reunited in 2010 in their own spin-off series Graceless. A spin-off that was just a little bit darker and definitely more mature than its parent series, Graceless saw both Abby and Zara grow up a lot. Across all four box sets, it also explored moral complexity and consequences. No matter how much the twins tried to help, they often had to face the horrific repercussions of their actions. And this time, the Doctor will have to face them, too…

Moral complexity

Simon Guerrier has written this entire box set, which is very fitting, as he’s written for the whole of Graceless so far. While it certainly won’t be as, shall we say, “mature” as the twins’ own spin-off series, Wicked Sisters looks set to have some of the same moral complexity. (And Sontarans too, which is always a bonus.)

Actor Laura Doddington was happy to play Zara again.

"They tried to get rid of us and they didn’t manage to – we’re here! It was like going back to the beginning of Key2Time, in studio with Peter Davison, and having Louise Jameson there was awesome with such a lovely energy."

Director Lisa Bowerman also reveals what it’s like working with a strong cast.

"It was a very happy team, it’s good to be able to work with people who get on, having a bit of a gossip, and Peter Davison’s always great to have around. If you have a happy working environment, you generally produce good work and I think we have here."

This sounds like an extremely exciting box set. A reunion between the Fifth Doctor and the Graceless twins has been a long time coming, and was in fact hinted at in the spin-off itself. What will the Doctor think of what his old friends have become? And just how far will he go to stop them? We can’t wait to find out.
