A brand new compilation of Doctor Who stories – Classic and New – will be released on Blu-Ray in November, tying into the huge multi-platform event Time Lord Victorious!

Over the past few months, we’ve been given a lot of announcements in relation to Time Lord Victorious. Most of these specifically about brand new stories that we can look forward to. In fact, just earlier this week, a brand new Doctor Who audio starring Tom Baker was announced for December.

However, it’s not just the new stories that tie into Time Lord Victorious. There are several stories from both the Classic and the New Series that are significant to the event, as well. And that’s what the upcoming Blu-ray release, Doctor Who: Time Lord Victorious: Road to the Dark Times, will focus on.

Released in the UK on Nov 9, Road to the Dark Times is a compilation of several key stories that connect to Time Lord Victorious. Some of these stories establish major mythology about the Dark Times – the primary setting of the multi-platform event, a time when the universe was young and gods and monsters roamed the universe. Others connect to the event perhaps even more directly…

Which stories are included?

From the Classic Series, we have: Planet of the Daleks; Genesis of the Daleks; The Deadly Assassin; State of Decay, and The Curse of Fenric. From the New Series, we have The Runaway Bride and The Waters of Mars.

While the two Dalek stories are interesting choices – at least right now – it’s definitely easy to see why the other stories have been selected. Many of these stories feature monsters or foes that thrived during the Dark Times. State of Decay especially stands out as a major tie-in: not only does it feature Vampires, but it also reveals their ancient history with the Time Lords – a history that’s currently being explored in the new Ninth Doctor comic Monstrous Beauty.

And of course, while not set during the Dark Times, it’s easy to see why The Waters of Mars has been included. In some ways, it’s central to the whole event. Not only does it feature the first instance of Ten claiming to be “the Time Lord Victorious”. But the Tenth Doctor’s actions during this huge event are a direct consequence of the mistakes he makes in this episode.

An easy introduction

Personally speaking, as someone who owns most of these stories already, this compilation has little appeal. But that doesn’t stop me from being extremely excited about it. Not for myself, but for new fans who’ve yet to dive into Classic Who that will be interested in watching this. Honestly, any excuse to get someone to watch Genesis of the Daleks for the first time is always a great one.

On top of that, it’s also nice to have a clear list of essential stories to watch that tie into this key event. So while I’m more likely to dive into my complete season Blu-rays than buy this new compilation, it’s still handy knowing what stories are included.

You can pre-order Time Lord Victorious: Road to the Dark Times in the UK from Amazon, HMV, or Zoom. It will be released Nov 9.
