Want to enjoy a story with Tom Baker in Doctor Who for free? This week, you can, with the first part of his first original Big Finish story, Destination: Nerva!
Did you enjoy listening to Big Finish’s first-ever audio last week? I certainly did. Oh No It Isn’t! provided a fascinating glimpse at the early day of both Big Finish and Bernice Summerfield, especially during the year before they obtained the license for Doctor Who.
If you missed out listening to that free story, don’t worry: another free audio story is now available to listen to. And if you’re a Tom Baker fan, you’re going to love this one: the first part of Destination: Nerva, the first-ever story released for The Fourth Doctor Adventures.
What’s particularly fitting about this is that, one month after the release of Season 14 on Blu-ray in the US and Canada, Destination: Nerva continues directly from the end of The Talons of Weng-Chiang, the final story of that iconic season. In fact, as many fans will surely recognize, it features an iconic location: Space Station Nerva, as originally featured in Fourth Doctor serials The Ark in Space and Revenge of the Cybermen.

Third trip, earliest visit
Destination: Nerva once again shows the Doctor visiting the station in the wrong order. While his second visit in Revenge was chronologically much earlier than his first, his third trip is essentially at the very beginning of the station’s long life. Here’s the official description for the story:
After saying their goodbyes to Professor Litefoot and Henry Gordon Jago, the Doctor and Leela respond to an alien distress call beamed direct from Victorian England. It is the beginning of a journey that will take them to the newly built Space Dock Nerva… where a long-overdue homecoming is expected.
A homecoming that could bring about the end of the human race.
You can listen to the first part of this key story for free by downloading it directly from Big Finish’s website. You can also purchase the complete story for just £4.50. Other stories from the first two seasons of The Fourth Doctor Adventures – starring Louise Jameson as Leela in the first and Mary Tamm as Romana in the second – are on sale now for just £5.99 each.
Alternatively, you can get season 1 or 2 in a bundle for £32 each, or purchase both together with the box set The Lost Stories: The Fourth Doctor for £100. While the last is a pricey option, the box set is highly recommended for the audio adaptation of The Foe from the Future, which is probably one of the best stories from The Lost Stories range. Either way, there’s a lot of Fourth Doctor goodness to check out right now for a good price.
