Just how accessible is the upcoming Doctor Who multi-platform event Time Lord Victorious? Pretty accessible, at least according to producer James Goss, who’s recently revealed more details about the ambitious project.

With the first issue of the Tenth Doctor comic story out on Sep 2, we’re just a couple of days away from the launch of Time Lord Victorious. We’ve been excited about this event ever since it was first announced back in April. Spread across multiple platforms and featuring the Eighth, Ninth and Tenth Doctors, this looks set to be one of the biggest Doctor Who events this year.

But what is it, exactly? What does the whole of the event revolve around? Recently, producer James Goss answered a few questions for the official Doctor Who website – including what it’s specifically about.

"The actual story is really simple – it’s set within the Dark Times at the start of the universe and follows the Eighth, Ninth and Tenth Doctors as they defend their home planet from a terrible race. Everything springs from that."

Honestly, that sounds pretty exciting. The Dark Times is a period in Doctor Who history that’s often been hinted at but rarely explored. Enemies like the Great Vampires and the Racnoss were originally from those times, but we know very little of the overall history. So it’ll be exciting to explore that idea in-depth.

Accessibility

But of course, the real question is this: just how accessible will Time Lord Victorious be? It’s being told across multiple platforms, including audios, comics, and novels. Will the fans need to experience every single story in order to enjoy it? According to James Goss:

"Absolutely not. It’s been designed so that if you just explore one bit of it, you’ll have a great time and understand the story fully. There are lots of individual stories that take place within Time Lord Victorious and you don’t have to consume them in a specific order. As you move about exploring the various strands, you’ll get a feel for the bigger picture and how it all links together naturally. Each story has some nuggets and links to other stories – but you won’t feel any the less if you miss them."

That’s definitely reassuring. While we’ll be aiming to cover Time Lord Victorious as much as possible, we can’t guarantee that we’ll be able to cover everything. More importantly, everything in Doctor Who appeals to different fans to different reasons, so it’s important that someone can enjoy a comic on its own if they don’t enjoy the audios or vice versa.

What’s to come

Interestingly, while a great deal has been announced already, Goss promises that there’s even more of Time Lord Victorious that we can look forward to.

"There’s still more to be announced and more that we’re working on. The various licensees have been fantastic in coming up with new things to explore and there are masses of treats still to be announced."

We don’t know whether this will mean more stories to be released or more merchandise, such as figurines. But it’s exciting to know that there’s so much to look forward to with this event.

More from Winter is Coming

All roads lead to…

But where does it all lead? Goss reveals the key story that’s somewhat central to this event.

"The various paths all lead towards the second BBC Book (All Flesh is Grass by Una McCormack) – but even that’s been designed so that, if that’s the only thing you read, it’s actually quite standalone (but hopefully will leave you dying to find out more)."

This isn’t too surprising. When All Flesh is Grass was initially revealed, it featured the Eighth, Ninth and Tenth Doctors prominently on the cover. It also looks like it could be one of the only stories that features Ten in full Time Lord costume.

Regardless, we’ll be keen to check out as much of Time Lord Victorious as possible, and we can’t wait for it to start in the upcoming month.
