Two Doctors will star in a brand new Doctor Who story – one that will be released on vinyl as part of the epic multi-platform project Time Lord Victorious!
When Big Finish announced their Doctor Who audios for the upcoming multi-platform event Time Lord Victorious, there were hints that there was one release that they weren’t quite telling us about. Something really special. Today, they’ve finally revealed exactly what that is.
Keep in mind, it’s not a multi-Doctor story, as you might have been expecting. But Echoes of Extinction does feature two different Doctors, specifically the Eighth and Tenth Doctors as played by Paul McGann and David Tennant, respectively. And while their adventures are separate, they are closely linked.
Perhaps most surprising of all is the form that this double adventure will take, at least initially: a double-A side vinyl, exclusive to UK supermarket chain ASDA. This is the first-ever story from Big Finish that’s been commissioned primarily for vinyl.
Here’s what we can expect from this intriguing upcoming release:
Trapped, a haunted monster waits to consume new victims. It needs help. It needs a doctor. Unfortunately, it also needs to kill whoever it meets. Thrust into immediate danger, and on the back-foot, it will take all of the Doctor’s ingenuity to triumph.
Two interlinked adventures. Two Doctors. One foe.
Two Doctors, two sides
Releasing an audio story as a vinyl-first release is a bold move, especially for Big Finish. While the company does have a heavy focus on physical media, most stories are released on either CD or download first. So to release something on vinyl before anything else is both surprising and risky.
However, at the same time, it’s also easy to see why Big Finish is aiming for something special with the vinyl market. For one thing, Big Finish has had plenty of success with single-disc vinyl releases. For the past few years, they’ve sold limited editions of selected Doctor Who stories in the format, and they all sold out extremely quickly.
It’s also clear that the story of Echoes of Extinction has been written specifically for the vinyl format. The double-A side means that the listener can listen to both parts of the story in either order, making it an extremely intriguing storyline. Paul McGann certainly likes the idea.
It really appeals to me, the idea that it’s in two parts, on two sides of vinyl. I think it’s fun for people listening. Part of the excitement is when the different incarnations meet… or nearly meet.

However, one thing that could initially cause concern is that the vinyl is exclusive to ASDA, making it potentially a story that most fans won’t get to hear, especially overseas. Thankfully, that’s not the case. While Echoes of Extinction will be released as a vinyl first on Nov 27, it will then be available as a download on Dec 4 for just £8.99. (No price is currently confirmed for the vinyl edition.)
Still, the fact that this two-part story has been created specifically with the vinyl format in mind makes it an exciting one. The idea of a story that could potentially be listened to in either order is intriguing, and I’ve only heard it done once before. (Specifically, with the Seventh Doctor audio Flip-Flop.) Like the rest of the Time Lord Victorious stories, this is definitely a release that I’m keen to check out.
