Brand new details have been revealed for the next volume of the fantastic Doctor Who audio series The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield, out in Sep 2020!

One expanded universe character that I’m a massive fan of is Bernice Summerfield. Originally created for the range of Doctor Who novels The New Adventures back in the Nineties, the former companion to the Seventh Doctor has since had a vast number of adventures on her own, first in novels and then later in Big Finish’s audios.

In 2014, a fresh jumping-on point was created for the character with Doctor Who: The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield. After many seasons of solo adventures, Bernice found herself reunited with the Seventh Doctor and Ace, facing first the Daleks and then the powerful god-like being Sutekh.

For the third volume of the series, a new Doctor was brought in – but not a Doctor Bernice was familiar with. Finding herself trapped in a parallel universe, Bernice met David Warner’s Doctor – an alternative third incarnation that somehow became the ruler of the universe. Eventually, they both escaped back to Bernice’s universe, with the Doctor eager to start being a hero once more. The latest news from Big Finish concerns what happens next…

Lost in Translation

Last year saw the release of The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield: Buried Memories, a collection of four brand new adventures for Warner’s Doctor and Bernice. The next volume of the series, Lost in Translation, continues their travels in the universe together. However, those travels do have one major destination…

"Have I Told You Lately? by Tim FoleyBernice and the Doctor find themselves lost in the dark with the only clue to their surroundings a mysterious voice. The Undying Truth by J A PrenticeA mysterious mission has discovered a body, one that should never be found. Can the Undying really be dead after all?Inertia by James GossA remote island on a dull world. Some boring natives, some uninteresting ruins. Can two time travellers manage to do nothing for a month?Gallifrey by Guy Adams & AK BenedictThe Doctor has come home. But he doesn’t belong here. And Bernice thinks there’s something very wrong with Gallifrey."

Gallifrey

So last thing’s first: Gallifrey. The Doctor returning to his homeworld, and yet at the same time, not the one that he knows. In the universe of Warner’s Doctor, the Time Lords were wiped out in a devastating war, so it’ll be interesting to hear how Warner reacts to visiting home.

It’s also been hinted that the Time Lords of the main Doctor Who universe won’t be too happy with the existence of another Doctor who really shouldn’t be there at all. So Gallifrey definitely looks set to be an extremely exciting episode for the series.

Competition winner

In fact, the rest of the series should be exciting to listen to. Both Tim Foley and James Goss are excellent Big Finish writers, with the latter having written many great stories for Benny over the years, so expectations are high for their episodes.

Interestingly, J A Prentice is not only a brand new writer for Big Finish, but his script The Undying Truth was the winner of a competition, in which a huge number of potential new writers submitted their entries. With The Undying Truth beating so many others, we definitely have high hopes for that story.

The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield: Lost in Translation will be released on CD and download in Sep 2020. You can pre-order it now directly from Big Finish’s website.
