Later this year, the Tenth Doctor and River Song will meet again in three brand new Doctor Who stories from Big Finish Productions!

This is something I’ve been hoping for for a long time. Ever since River Song first joined Big Finish back in 2015, at least. In some ways, since her first appearance in Doctor Who back in 2008: the two-part story Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead. But – after meeting many earlier incarnations of her husband in her own audio spin-off series – we’ll finally hear her meet the Tenth Doctor again. Not once, but three times!

Announced by Big Finish today, The Tenth Doctor and River Song is a brand new Doctor Who audio series. Starring David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor and Alex Kingston as River Song, the series will focus on the earliest adventures of the Doctor and River. At least, from his perspective.

This is an extremely exciting new series. Not only will this be the first time that David Tennant and Alex Kingston have shared a Doctor Who story together in over twelve years. But this will also give us a fresh perspective of the Doctor’s and River’s relationship. By this point, we know much more than the Doctor does about River. How will he react to seeing her again? And how much will he trust her?

Other Doctors

If Ten meeting River again wasn’t exciting enough, two other Doctors will feature in this series of adventures. Both Peter Davison and Colin Baker will appear as the Fifth and Sixth Doctors, respectively.

River meeting earlier incarnations of her husband has almost become a running joke by this point. Not only has she met most of the Classic Doctors in her own audio spin-off The Diary of River Song (an episode of which is currently free right now). But she even had a major role in the Eighth Doctor series Doom Coalition.

If you’re wondering how River can be meeting Classic Doctors when Ten had no idea who she was, there’s usually a good explanation for that. Whether she uses a disguise, erases their memory or simply works from a distance, River makes sure to keep her history with her husband relatively tidy. Well, mostly, anyway.

Two earlier Doctors appearing in her series with Ten may actually turn out to be a brilliant decision. River has always known which Doctors can remember her and which ones can’t, but how? Perhaps it was Ten who explained that he was the first one to remember her? We can’t wait to find out.

An exciting new series

Producer David Richardson is unsurprisingly extremely excited about this new series.

"The Tenth Doctor only met River Song once on TV, and that was at the end of her life. But what happened after/before that, after/before the Eleventh Doctor came on the scene? What a joy this run of stories was to make, bringing David Tennant and Alex Kingston together online to record during lockdown, exploring those previously untold meetings between Ten and River. Those two actors absolutely sparkled together – it was so clear they were having a blast!"

This looks set to be a great new series. We can’t wait to hear the brand new adventures of Ten and River in Nov 2020!

You can pre-order each episode individually of Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor and River Song right now on CD or download, or get all three in a special box set which contains a fourth disc of extras, right now from Big Finish’s website.
