The Doctor meets Churchill and faces the Daleks once more in the sixth volume of Doctor Who: The Third Doctor Adventures – out today!

If there’s one range of Doctor Who audios from Big Finish that has noticeably improved over time, it’s definitely The Third Doctor Adventures. When it began back in 2015, the first volume was promising, and the stories captured the tone of Jon Pertwee’s era well, at least. But at the same time, it featured narration that worked against the flow of the story, and Tim Treloar was still finding his feet in the role of the Third Doctor.

However, over subsequent volumes, the series gradually became more confident. Not only was the narration removed from volume 2 onwards, but Tim Treloar’s performance has improved with every release. As well as capturing the magic of Jon Pertwee’s Doctor perfectly, the chemistry between him and Katy Manning (who plays companion Jo Grant) is fantastic to listen to.

Last year, the series gave us perhaps one of its most exciting releases yet. After obtaining permission to use the iconic character of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, the role was recast with Jon Culshaw, who’s absolutely fantastic in the role. With John Levene returning as Sergeant Benton, it felt like a UNIT family reunion.

The latest volume

So you can imagine how excited we are that the sixth volume of The Third Doctor Adventures has finally been released. Featuring two four-part stories, this latest box set features both familiar friends and familiar foes.

Opening the box set is Poison of the Daleks by Guy Adams. This is the second time that the pepper pots have featured in a Third Doctor audio – the first was The Conquest of Far back in volume 3 – so it’s nice to see them return here. What makes this new story so intriguing is that, while the earlier story took place far in the future, Poison is set at least partially on twentieth-century Earth, so it looks like we’re getting another UNIT versus Daleks story with this one.

On top of that, we’ve also got Operation Hellfire, the first Third Doctor story on audio to see him travel into Earth’s past. Written by Jonathan Barnes, the Doctor is sent on a mission by the Time Lords into the Second World War. While having to battle occultist Nazis, he also gets to meet his old friend, Winston Churchill, once again played by Ian McNeice.

With two such intriguing plotlines, we’re definitely keen to listen to the latest box set of a series that has only gotten better and more confident over time.

You can purchase Doctor Who: The Third Doctor Adventures: Volume 6 on CD and download right now from Big Finish’s website.
