A major new multi-media project, Doctor Who: Time Lord Victorious, has been announced. But what is it? And which Doctors will feature?

There has been a lot of expanded media released based on Doctor Who over the years. Ever since the show began, we’ve had books, comics, audios and so much more, giving us brand new stories of our favorite Time Lord and beyond. But, while we’ve had a great deal of material already, I don’t think anything has quite prepared us for what the BBC has planned next.

Yesterday saw the announcement of Time Lord Victorious. Scheduled to launch in Sep 2020, the ambitious project will see an epic Doctor Who story told across various media, including audio, novels, comics, vinyl, and digital. If that wasn’t enough, there will also be immersive theatre, escape rooms and games based on the project!

Unsurprisingly, there are a lot of partners involved in this, including Penguin Random House, BBC Books, Doctor Who Magazine, Titan Comics, Escape Hunt, Big Finish, and Immersive Everywhere. So a huge number of fans are likely to have some way of enjoying this huge event.

Who and where?

So which Doctors will feature? So far, the project looks set to be focused on the Eighth, Ninth and Tenth Doctors. The last one isn’t exactly a surprise – it was David Tennant’s Doctor who used the words “Time Lord Victorious” in his penultimate story The Waters of Mars (as seen in the clip above). Will this epic story be set after that, from his perspective? Or will it focus on an alternative timeline that sees him embracing that role, as briefly seen in comic story Four Doctors?

There’s admittedly a lot that we’ve yet to learn about this project. But I think we can take a few guesses as to which media will focus on which Doctors. Paul McGann has been heavily involved with Big Finish for almost twenty years now, with several Eighth Doctor stories being released every year. So it’s easy to imagine that his stories will be primarily on audio.

Sadly, I can’t imagine the same will be true of the Ninth Doctor. While it would be amazing if Christopher Eccleston did return to the role – in any form – it’s more likely that his stories will be told in either comics or books. Still, considering how little we’ve had of the Ninth Doctor in the expanded universe at all, any Ninth Doctor story is better than no Ninth Doctor story.

Central Doctor

As for David Tennant’s Doctor? Will he only be appearing in books, comics, or audio? Honestly, it could go either way. We know that Tennant is a massively busy actor. But at the same time, we also know that he’s returned to play the role of the Tenth Doctor several times already.

Honestly, I think his Doctor is going to show up in some way across all media. It’s not just that he’s arguably the most popular Doctor of the New Series. It’s not even just the fact that he’s the Doctor who once claimed to be the “Time Lord Victorious”. But the promotional artwork – showing Ten in full Time Lord costume, is definitely a big clue. Out of all three Doctors featured, it’s clear that he has the biggest role in this story.

There’s a lot more that we’ve yet to find out, but this is definitely a project that we’re excited about. We’ll be covering further news on Time Lord Victorious as it’s revealed, so stay tuned!
