Ianto Jones fans, you’re going to love this news! The next Torchwood story written by Gareth David-Lloyd has been announced, scheduled for June!

Over the past couple of years, Gareth David-Lloyd – best known to Torchwood fans as the much-loved Ianto Jones – has written several audios for Big Finish Productions. Unsurprisingly, they’ve often focused on Ianto. More than that, however: they’ve also been rather fantastic.

As a result, when a new story by Gareth David-Lloyd is announced, it’s something that Torchwood fans can immediately start looking forward to. And June’s release – Dinner and a Show already sounds hugely appealing: a night at the opera for Toshiko and Ianto!

"It’s February 14th and Owen is a no-show for Toshiko’s not-Valentine’s-Valentine’s Night at the opera.Worse, when Ianto turns up he has bad news for Toshiko, for Cardiff and for fans of classical music – the opera is full of aliens. The doors are bolted, there’s no way out, and this could be the final curtain."

Gareth David-Lloyd has written several Torchwood stories already, most recently Retirement Plan from Torchwood One: Latter Days.

More from Winter is Coming

Tosh and Ianto

This sounds like your classic Torchwood story – a fun night in Cardiff that goes horribly wrong. But perhaps more interesting than that is the idea of a story focusing on just Toshiko and Ianto.

When David-Lloyd writes stories for the Doctor Who spin-off, he often focuses on particular pairings. The Last Beacon focused on Ianto and Owen camping on a mission, while Retirement Plan from Torchwood One: Latter Days had Ianto in a virtual world with his workmate Tommy, a regular character from the prequel series.

So it’s nice to see that for his next story, David-Lloyd will be focusing more on Ianto and Tosh. We’ve had some scenes of just the two of them together in the TV series, particularly in Countrycide. But nothing that’s explored their working relationship in depth so far. Dinner and a Show looks set to change that.

Producer James Goss’s description for the story also sounds promising.

"Gareth David-Lloyd’s written a script that’s heart-warming and silly and moving and just a little bit experimental. Mostly it’s there to give us a brilliant hour in the company of Ianto and Toshiko. Warning: Contains Opera."

Sounds like a great little story to look forward to. Dinner and a Show will be released in June and is available to pre-order on CD and download now. Until then, there’s Tropical Beach Sounds and Other Relaxing Seascapes #4, out next month, which features none other than Sir Michael Palin narrating. Sir Michael Palin and Torchwood. That’s still a combination I can’t believe has happened.
