The First Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan return in a brand new volume of Doctor Who: The First Doctor Adventures. But where they’ve returned is the last place they ever wanted to go back to…

Now, this is a release I’ve been really excited about. Partly because The First Doctor Adventures has been a particularly strong range of Doctor Who audios. Featuring the cast from An Adventure in Space and Time playing the roles of the original TARDIS team, and giving us brand new stories done in the style of the very first season, The First Doctor Adventures has been a highly effective combination of old and new.

It’s been over a year since the release of the last volume (which featured a very special guest appearance by Carole Ann Ford, the original Susan, who returns next month in Susan’s War). But a new volume in the series is finally here!

The First Doctor Adventures: Volume 4 gives us two brand new stories of the original TARDIS team. Not only do they visit Russia during a particularly dark time. But they also face some very old enemies – the Daleks!

More from Winter is Coming

Return to Skaro and Last of the Romanovs

What’s particularly interesting about Return to Skaro is that, at this point, the TARDIS team has only met the Daleks once before, in the aptly named serial The Daleks. (Admittedly, that’s one of several possible titles for it, but most fans agree that The Daleks suits the story best.) Their second appearance on television, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, is at least equally important, as it features the departure of Susan.

Admittedly, slotting another Dalek encounter between the first two iconic stories is a risky move. But it could also be an interesting one, too. Particularly with the return of the Thals and the focus on the original Dalek city. It sounds like this could be an even more direct sequel than The Dalek Invasion of Earth was. So this is one story I’m eager to listen to and review.

The second story in today’s release, Last of the Romanovs, is a pure historical by Jonathan Barnes. I do enjoy a good historical story, and a story by Barnes about the last Tsar of Russia sounds extremely promising. Return to Skaro is definitely the main draw here, but considering how strong the pure historicals have been – both in The First Doctor Adventures and in the original TV series – I have high hopes for this one.

The First Doctor Adventures: Volume 4 is out now on CD and download directly from Big Finish’s website.
