The Fifth Doctor’s current season comes to an end with the release of the latest Doctor Who audio Warzone / Conversion – where he faces the Cybermen once again!

Today, the Fifth Doctor faces some old enemies in Big Finish’s latest Doctor Who audio Warzone / Conversion. Released today, the second story of this audio double bill features Peter Davison’s Doctor reunited with the Cybermen – as played by David Banks and Mark Hardy, who regularly played them in the Eighties.

This is a pretty significant release for Big Finish. Not only is it the first Fifth Doctor story to feature the Cybermen since The Gathering, released over thirteen years ago. But it’s also keen to explore the aftermath of Earthshock – not just when the Fifth Doctor met the Cybermen on television, but also the story where his companion Adric died.

Here are the official descriptions for both stories.

"Warzone by Chris ChapmanAt Warzone, competitors gather from across the galaxy to test the limits of their endurance and achieve their personal best. So, when the TARDIS materialises in the middle of a racetrack, the Doctor and his friends must literally run for their lives.Conversion by Guy AdamsOn the fringes of the galaxy, techno-pirates and research medics fight for the secrets of advanced extra-terrestrial technology. For the Doctor, however, a more personal battle awaits as he confronts his own guilt and the creatures that killed a friend: the Cybermen."

More from Winter is Coming

A major reunion

This is a release that we’ve been hugely excited about for some time, ever since we got the chance to announce it back in June. Not only are we huge fans of Earthshock, but it’s extremely exciting to think that Peter Davison is working with David Banks and Mark Hardy again – something that hasn’t happened since The Five Doctors thirty-six years ago. Unsurprisingly, Davison himself seems happy about it.

"As I’ve said many times, I really liked the incarnation of the Cybermen from my time as the Doctor. I think it’s a very well-written story and both Mark and David did it really well. So I think it’s great to have them back. They’re not nearly so scary in real life."

Producer and director Scott Handcock is also enthusiastic about the Fifth Doctor and the Cybermen being reunited.

"Chris Chapman’s Warzone plunges our heroes into the middle of an intergalactic marathon with fatal consequences, whilst Guy Adams’s Conversion pits the Doctor and his companions against the Cybermen once again – and is the first Fifth Doctor story to feature them in thirteen years! If that wasn’t enough, it’s an even greater joy to invite David Banks back as the Cyber Leader, confronting Peter for the first time since the 1980s!"

We’ll certainly be reviewing both stories very soon. In the meantime, you can listen to them right now by purchasing Warzone / Conversion on CD or download from Big Finish’s website.
