Latter Days, the latest box set in the prequel series Torchwood One, is out now! What can we expect from the latest adventures of Yvonne Hartman and Ianto Jones?

Torchwood One has certainly been an interesting series. Set before the events of Army of Ghosts/Doomsday, the prequel series gives us a clear idea of the organization as it was once lead by Yvonne Hartman (Tracey-Ann Oberman), with Ianto Jones (Gareth David-Lloyd) as one of her most trusted colleagues.

If you’ve listened to and enjoyed the series so far, you’ll be happy to know that the latest volume of the series, Latter Days, is out now! Featuring a mixture of stories (one of which has been written by David-Lloyd himself), this latest set explores the theme of retirement. Of course, with an organisation like Torchwood, it’s not exactly the easiest organization to get away from…

"3.1 Retirement Plan by Gareth David-LloydTorchwood’s Head of Alien Acquisitions is retiring. But there’s something very wrong in the idyll of El Cielo. And it’s going to kill Ianto.3.2. Locker 15 by Matt FittonA mysterious force is wiping out Torchwood, and the only person who can save London is a cleaner called Dave.3.3 The Rockery by Tim FoleyAnne Hartman has retired to the country, which comes as a surprise to her daughter. Has Yvonne met a problem even she can’t solve?"

What to expect

Each of the episodes in this box set sounds intriguing. Once again, we’ve got another episode written by Ianto Jones himself, Gareth David-Lloyd. He’s written a couple of great episodes for Torchwood already, including The Last Beacon and Blind Summit in Torchwood One: Machines, both of which were very focused on Ianto. From the description, it sounds like the same will be true of Retirement Plan as well, so it should be a lot of fun to listen to – especially if the cover of Latter Days is anything to go by.

The idea of exploring Torchwood from a more mundane perspective sounds interesting, too. Especially based on Matt Fitton’s description for Locker 15 in Vortex magazine.

"Even though Torchwood are dealing with weird and wonderful aliens you’ve got to remember they still have an office to run – with people to empty the bins, refill the paper tray and fix the photocopier. Would someone who has done that at Torchwood need to be retconned when they leave, and what would the longer term effects of that be?"

Lastly, The Rockery looks set to focus on something I thought we’d never get to explore: Yvonne’s family. Considering what kind of woman Yvonne is, you have to wonder exactly what kind of mother she’d have. The casting of Barbara Flynn in the role of Anne Hartman sounds like a perfect choice, so I’m certainly eager to hear this one.
