Doctor Who: Freema Agyeman joins Big Finish!

Next year, Freema Agyeman will return to her iconic role of Doctor Who companion Martha Jones in a new Torchwood audio by Big Finish!
This is news that many Doctor Who fans have been waiting a long time for. In February 2020, Freema Agyeman will reprise her old role of former Tenth Doctor companion Martha Jones!
This is something that Big Finish listeners have been wanting to happen for a long time. Agyeman was fantastic as Martha, and there was always a lot of potential in the character. Many actors from the Russell T Davies era of Doctor Who have joined Big Finish since they received the license for the New Series back in 2015. But, even after David Tennant, Billie Piper and Catherine Tate returned to their old roles of the Tenth Doctor, Rose Tyler and Donna Noble respectively, we didn’t hear anything for the longest time regarding Freema. Until now. And Freema Agyeman seems to be as happy about it as we are.
"Aw mate, the nostalgia has been quite overwhelming. It really is like stepping into comfortable old shoes. It feels like about five minutes ago and yet so much time has passed. That’s the wonderful thing about the Whoniverse – you never feel on the outside of it. It’s great to be back."
What’s particularly interesting is that Freema’s first performance as Martha Jones in over ten years won’t be opposite David. Instead, she’ll be appearing in the popular spin-off series Torchwood, opposite Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper in Dissected.

"Gwen Cooper turns up on Martha Jones’s doorstep with a dead body in tow. She needs to ask one final favour of her. And to find out why they stopped being friends.A lot’s happened to Torchwood since Martha left. A lot’s happened to Martha since she left Torchwood. And there’s something very odd about the dead body Gwen’s brought with her. Tonight Gwen’s going to be giving more answers than she bargained for."

This is definitely an interesting avenue to explore with Martha. She had previously appeared in Torchwood during the middle of Series 2, set between her appearances in Series 3 and 4 of Doctor Who. With this story, it sounds like this is set quite some time after that, so it’ll be a great opportunity to explore what happened to Martha during that time. Especially if it is set after Series 4 of Who.
Having Freema Agyeman opposite Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper is also exciting. Writer Tim Foley gives us a good idea of what to expect with this one.
"Martha Jones is back! And I’ve locked her in a room with Gwen! It’s such a delight to pit these two against each other. This is quite an experimental story – you’ll be listening to an autopsy in real time, which was such a fun challenge. Luckily for me Eve and Freema spar off each other marvellously, stuck in a lab with nothing but a corpse for company…"
This is one Torchwood story that I’m definitely eager to hear. I’m very excited to hear Martha Jones return once again – and hopefully hear more of the character in the future…
