Doctor Who and Torchwood movie: Pure rumor, but should such a movie be made?

We take a look at the latest rumor about a Torchwood/Doctor Who movie, and ask ourselves the important question: should such a movie be made?

So there’s been a rumor travelling around the past week or so about the possibility of a Torchwood or Doctor Who movie being made. One that could star David Tennant, John Barrowman and Billie Piper playing their old roles of the Tenth Doctor, Captain Jack Harkness and Rose Tyler!

However, there’s a reason why we haven’t covered this sooner. It is only a rumor – one that John Barrowman himself started! Apparently, he told the following to RadioTimes.com regarding some ideas he’d shared with former showrunner and Torchwood creator Russell T Davies:

"I was speaking to [Davies] – he’d picked up an award for A Very English Scandal – and we said: ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could do a Torchwood or Doctor Who movie with [Captain] Jack, David [Tennant] and Billie [Piper]?"

“Wouldn’t it be great…?” The key words that show that even Barrowman basically admits that this is purely wishful thinking. This was pretty much confirmed by both David Tennant and Catherine Tate when they were asked about it at Galaxy Con in Raleigh, North Carolina. Tate’s response was, “I think that’s one John started himself”, while Tennant joked, “John might just be doing it for himself, running up and down Cardiff docks.”

So, as you can see, it’s not exactly an idea that anyone’s taking seriously right now.

But what if they did? Should such a movie be made?

There’s no denying that the team of Ten and Rose were popular. There’s also no denying the fact that it’s been over a decade since their main travels in Series 2.

Should such a movie be made?

If a Torchwood movie were to be made – and this is a very big if – it would need Russell T Davies’s involvement. Even the official continuation of the series on audio has had some key involvement by Davies, so this should be true for a movie as well. Ideally, the script would need to be written by him.

But is that likely to happen? One of the key reasons why Torchwood was never brought back on television after Miracle Day was because Russell T Davies simply didn’t go back to the series. And unlike so many of the cast and crew, he’s never really shown much of an interest in going back. Considering he also told Radio Times that he’d never write another episode of Doctor Who, the chances of a major return to Torchwood aren’t looking too good.

As for the cast, if they were to bring back Tennant and Piper, then it couldn’t be set during the Tenth Doctor’s and Rose’s travels together. After all, it’s been over a decade already since Series 2, and while they can easily play those roles on audio, it’s a little less convincing when it’s done on-screen. The most likely option would be that we’d get the half-human copy of the Tenth Doctor from Journey’s End and Rose in the parallel universe.

Also, a movie would need a really good budget to make it work. And let’s be honest, we know the BBC. The chances of such a movie getting a really great budget are slim. You could have potential involvement from another company, particularly an American one, but considering something like that lead to Miracle Day – a series that many Torchwood fans aren’t exactly keen on – that probably wouldn’t be a very welcome idea.

I’m not completely against the idea of a Torchwood revival movie. Just that the chances of it being great aren’t exactly…well, great. For the moment, this is nothing but wishful thinking anyway. And right now, that’s probably for the best.
