Doctor Who: Cover revealed for First and Second multi-Doctor story

November sees the release of Doctor Who multi-Doctor story Daughter of the Gods, featuring the First and Second Doctors, and Big Finish have revealed the amazing cover for this very special story!

I don’t often get excited about Big Finish’s covers for their Doctor Who audios. Not that they aren’t usually strong, but there are so many that there has to be something really special to grab my attention.

Of course, a multi-Doctor story that focuses on the First and Second Doctors would probably do that. Especially when the cover is as gorgeous as the cover for Daughter of the Gods.

The story focuses on the Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe meeting the First Doctor, Steven…and Katarina. But how? Katarina died during the events of The Daleks’ Master Plan, and she had only just joined the TARDIS crew at the end of the previous story, The Myth Makers. So how could she be traveling with the First Doctor and Steven on a different adventure altogether…one that the Second Doctor can’t even remember?

Just to make it clear, this isn’t something that Big Finish has overlooked, but a major part of the story, judging by the official description:

"When Zoe reattaches an old piece of equipment to the TARDIS console, she, Jamie and the Doctor are very lucky to avoid a collision. But the place they find themselves in may be even more dangerous – because there they encounter another Doctor, a space pilot named Steven… and a young woman called Katarina who really shouldn’t be there…."

I was already excited enough for this story already. Especially with David K Barnes writing, who also wrote last year’s amazing Dalek story The Dalek Occupation of Winter. But then Big Finish revealed the cover, and it looks absolutely fantastic.

Simple but effective

Designed by Tom Webster, the cover is exactly what you want for a story like this. It’s simple, but it makes it clear that both the First and Second Doctors and their teams have equal importance in this story, splitting it cleanly down the middle. There might be a small nod to the layout that we got with The Day of the Doctor‘s promotional image, but it’s not quite as direct as World Enough and Time‘s version with two Masters.

More from Winter is Coming

One really nice touch is that you can see just the faintest hints of each Doctor’s intros. It’s a small thing, but it works very nicely, and really helps to add to that feeling of a clash of eras.

Lastly, the Daleks used for this cover are really old-school. That distinctive early design of grey and blue is still a classic, and using them for the cover helps to complete that feeling of Sixties nostalgia.

The cover for Daughter of the Gods is simple, but extremely effective. If I wasn’t excited enough to listen to this story before, I definitely am now!

Daughter of the Gods will be released in November on CD and download. You can pre-order it now from Big Finish’s website.
