Doctor Who rumour: Major series villain to return in New Year’s Day special?
This year’s series of Doctor Who has seen a noticeable lack of returning villains for the show. But could that change on New Year’s Day?

Chris Chibnall made it clear that there would be no returning villains in Doctor Who Series Eleven. The previous nine episodes have featured all new creations – and with only the final episode, The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos, to air it seems highly likely that Chibnall has kept true to his word.
But rumours have begun to spread that the recently announced New Year’s Day special in 2019 will herald the return of a very old foe. According to British newspaper, The Mirror, the menace threatening our Team TARDIS will be no other than the Daleks:
"Doctor Who is rolling out the fan faves for the New Year’s Day special as Jodie Whittaker’s Time Lord battles the Daleks. The iconic baddies had been banished by new showrunner Chris Chibnall, along with the Cybermen and Weeping Angels. But they will now try to exterminate the Doctor in the hour-long special."
The bronze look has been the popular choice for the Daleks’s appearance since 2005. But could that soon change?

That’s not all; according to The Mirror our favourite pepper pots will have “a makeover, losing the bronze look”.
If true, this statement indicates no redesign like the New Paradigm Daleks in 2010, but instead a simple paint job, replacing the Time War look that has haunted the Doctor on screen since 2005.
What are my personal thoughts on this potential development? Even though I have been an advocate of the Daleks taking an extended break, I have to say, this does excite me somewhat. You see, despite the fact I have vouched for the Daleks missing a couple of series, the largely lackluster antagonists of Series Eleven has made me miss past villains a lot more than I was expecting. As long as the Daleks are brought back as a genuinely powerful threat, then I will be happy.
