In 2019, Torchwood will be facing some dangerous Doctor Who monsters, including the Fendahl, the Slitheen and the Autons. But they’ll also be meeting an old friend of the Doctor’s: former companion Jo Jones!

Big Finish today have just revealed some incredibly exciting news. The next season of their range of monthly Torchwood audios, which take place across the whole of Torchwood’s history, begins in March 2019. And it does so in an incredibly exciting way, because for each of the first four stories at least, the Torchwood team will be facing several major Doctor Who monsters.

The first release will see Gwen Cooper encounter a classic Fourth Doctor era monster in Night of the Fendahl by Tim Foley. Taking place in the same location as the original story, it looks like it’ll be a direct sequel to Image of the Fendahl.

But it’s April that we’ll get the most exciting release. Because not only will Captain Jack encounter the giant maggots from The Green Death. He’ll also meet the iconic companion Jo Jones in David Llewellyn’s The Green Life. Again, this even seems to take place in the original story’s location and sounds like a very direct sequel to the much loved classic.

I honestly can’t wait to hear what happens when Jo and Jack meet each other. I’m sure Jack would be aware of her, at least. Whether it’s from her days of UNIT as a former Third Doctor companion, or traveling the world as a constant crusader afterwards, Jo’s bound to have attracted his attention at some point. Certainly, I’m curious to see how well these two will get on.

More from Winter is Coming

Series One fans are bound to love May’s release. Sync is set during the events of Christopher Eccleston’s only series of Doctor Who, when Margaret Blaine was the Mayor of Cardiff. In this story, she’ll meet Suzie Costello from Torchwood.

This actually sounds like a very intriguing release. Suzie was an incredibly interesting and complicated character from Torchwood‘s first series. Her previous audio story, Moving Target by Guy Adams, was a fantastic listen. I can’t wait for Lisa McMullin’s take on both her and Margaret in Sync.

The last story currently announced is June release Sargasso by Christopher Cooper, featuring Rhys Williams. Plastic is becoming a major problem in the Earth’s oceans. But it’s about to get even worse, as the Nestene Consciousness has returned. And they certainly have a use for plastic…

All of these stories sound really fantastic. If I have to pick one that I’m most eager to listen to, it would definitely be The Green Life. Jack meeting Jo sounds too good to miss. But honestly, all of these sound like very promising stories. I’m already looking forward to next year. Along the continuation of God Among Us, (which had an amazing first volume, by the way,) 2019 looks set to be a good year for Torchwood.

You can pre-order each of these stories, or subscribe to the whole twelve-story season of monthly Torchwood audios, directly from Big Finish’s website.
