Doctor Who: Should Craig Ferguson have been a companion?

When BBC cast Peter Capaldi as the Doctor, there was one thing I wanted. It never happened, and it feels like a missed opportunity.

Many people know of the friendship between Craig Ferguson and Peter Capaldi. They were in a band together called The Dreamboys, and have stayed friends. While Peter stayed in Great Britain to be an actor on shows such as The Thick of It and other British shows, Ferguson took a different path.

Craig Ferguson came to America, became an American citizen, and eventually ended up on the Late Late Night Show, now hosted by James Corden. It was a quirky show that was probably the best thing on TV at 12:30 in the morning, if not of all the late night shows. It was full of sketches, dancing with a puppet horse — in short terms, it was unlike anything I’d ever seen.

The one thing The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson had that many tv talk shows in America didn’t have was an open Doctor Who fan running the show. On his desk, Craig Ferguson had a miniature TARDIS and Doctor Who actors on the show. From Matt Smith to David Tennant Craig Ferguson broke ground for Doctor Who actors in America.

He openly admitted that some people who have no idea who or what they were talking about when they mentioned Doctor Who. His questions were inappropriate, but it was the only way I could see my favorite actors talked about on an American talk show.

Peter’s announcement

Through research about Peter Capaldi is when I found out that Craig Ferguson knew him. Better yet, they were in a boy band, and they did drugs together! (Not anymore, Craig Ferguson has been very open in his autobiography.)

I found out that in 2009, when In the Loop came out, Ferguson had Capaldi on the show, and openly talked about how they used to do drugs together and were in a band. When Capaldi became the Doctor, Ferguson he would tell anyone who knew about Doctor Who that he knew Peter.

So immediately, even though I knew it wouldn’t happen, I wanted Craig Ferguson to be on an episode of Doctor Who. I still do, to be honest. But the idea of having Capaldi and Ferguson on the show together just seemed hilarious. Both made horrible innuendos that made anyone blush, and even though it probably wouldn’t air on BBC, I wanted it.

These are just the musings of a ‘What if’ scenario. But I do wish that, with Craig Ferguson’s connection to getting the Doctor Who actors a role on American talk shows, he could get on a cameo on the show.

I know this article would have made more sense a couple of years ago, but it’s 2017 and I still really want this. So, why not put an article out there about it?

What do you think? Do you wish Craig Ferguson could have made a cameo on the show with Capaldi?
