The first openly gay companion to the Doctor will take her first steps in the TARDIS in season 10 as reports say that Bill is gay!

Finally we have an openly gay companion on the TARDIS! While it is not the first character from the Doctor Who universe to be from the LGBTQ community, it is still a remarkable moment for fans of Doctor Who!

Bill Potts, Pearl Mackie’s character in season 10 of the beloved BBC show, will be gay. And as Pearl herself says, it is the 21st century. This shouldn’t be a strange thing or even be made into a big deal.

The BBC confirmed the news earlier today and really, it is about time. With Captain Jack, we had to wait for his love story on Torchwood because that was more appropriate than it being on Doctor Who.

The actress says “It’s important to say people are gay, people are black – there are also aliens in the world as well so watch out for them. I remember watching TV as a young mixed race girl not seeing many people who looked like me, so I think being able to visually recognise yourself on screen is important. [Being gay] is not the main thing that defines her character – it’s something that’s part of her and something that she’s very happy and very comfortable with.”

We’re really excited and it makes Bill even more of an amazing companion! She isn’t going to be strung along in a weird love story with the Doctor!
