Doctor Who And Sherlock Cross Over And Universes Collide

In honor of season 4 of Sherlock’s debut and the impending Doctor Who season 10 premiere, the BBC looks at a few times Doctor Who and Sherlock crossed over.

God love the BBC. They know how long we’ve been waiting for the upcoming Doctor Who premiere, and they must know the Sherlock premiere is only mocking our impatience. To keep the wait bearable, they’ve compiled a list of the best (and most coincidental) times that Doctor Who and Sherlock cross over. And we’ve picked our favorites.

We’ll take what we can get, especially when it involves a fun list of Easter eggs some of may have over looked.

Peter Capaldi was Holmes, once upon a time.

That’s right. Peter Capaldi actually played Holmes in a different lifetime (and on a different show). Capaldi was a regular on the The All New Alexei Sayle Show when it aired in the ’90s. That’s our very own Time Lord playing Holmes in a sketch opposite Sayle as Dr. Watson.

The Doctor was Holmes too.

In Matt Smith’s tenure as the Doctor, he squared off against the bad guy, Simeon, and used the Sherlock disguise as a way to throw the enemy off the trail. Not that he thought it would work, but in the “The Snowmen” he coupled his silly disguise with a lot of nonsensical talk, and it did the trick. How would you respond to this question, “I see from your collar stud you have an apple tree and a wife with a limp! Am I right?”

Is Madame Vastra just a bizarro Holmes?

I mean… I’m not saying Madame Vastra IS Holmes (or vice versa) but have we ever seen them in the same place?

She’s often called “the Great Detective” which is usually only used in reference to the Sherlock Holmes character. She has also been known to do her own bit of sleuthing. In fact, Simeon told her in “The Snowmen” that Arthur Conan Doyle (author of the original Sherlock mysteries) was surely basing his characters on her. Seems legit to me.

They share a lot of creative minds.

The BBC drama, Sherlock, share creators in Stephan Moffat and Mark Gatiss, and writer Stephen Thomas has also penned episodes for both popular shows.

The list goes on and on. BBC cites more links, “Directors Euros Lyn, Toby Haynes, Nick Hurran, Colm McCarthy and Douglas Mackinnon have all helmed episodes of both Doctor Who and Sherlock and if that wasn’t enough, The Six Thatchers was directed by the brilliant Rachel Talalay whose previous credits include “Dark Water/ Death in Heaven” and “Heaven Sent / Hell Bent.”

2017 has proven to be a big year for both shows, as well. Sherlock fans are reaping the benefits of an earlier premiere than the Whovians, but our time is coming. Just sit tight.
