Doctor Who: Steven Moffat Against Bringing Back Meta-Crisis Doctor

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat says that he will never bring back the Meta-Crisis Doctor to the show. Is this the best decision?
The Meta-Crisis Doctor came to be in the episode ‘Journey’s End.’ A hybrid created from the combined DNA of the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble, using regenerative energy, he has one heart and the lifespan of a human. Colloquially known as Tentoo, this unique being was written as the perfect solution to the tragically impossible love story between the Doctor and Rose Tyler.
Considering all of the characters that could hypothetically return to Doctor Who, at least for one episode, the Meta-Crisis Doctor and Rose are two of the most coveted amongst fans. The same can be said of all of the hypothetical spin-offs that could potentially be created from the universe of the show. It would be fascinating to check in on him and Rose, as well as further explore the alternate universe in which they live. As we have discussed in a previous article, there are bound to be complications for them.

Also, this would allow David Tennant to return, while circumventing the issue of his aging out of the role of the Tenth Doctor. In a recent interview with Doctor Who Magazine (according to an article by William Martin of CultBox), however, showrunner Steven Moffat expressed an opposing viewpoint on the matter. When asked if he would ever again bring the Meta-Crisis Doctor back to Doctor Who, he replied that he would not. His reasoning for this is that he prefers for Tennant to play “the real Doctor,” as opposed to “a substitute Doctor.” While I understand the sentiment, this does unfairly put the kibosh on what could be a great story.
Hopefully, perhaps Chris Chibnall, or another future showrunner, will see things differently. And if a spin-off were to be created, the folks who work on the main show would not have to be involved, so how they feel about it would largely be irrelevant. If neither is to happen, Big Finish could always create some adventures, as we discussed in another previous article.
