E! News Ranked the Companions of the Revival of Doctor Who

After nine seasons of the new Doctor Who, fans have a lot of content to rank. Unsurprisingly, one of those rankings involves the best companions of the revival.

Every character on Doctor Who will have their own following. Even auxiliary characters, such as Alonso Frame, earned the recognition and appreciation of the fans. While they may not have been the focal points of the episodes, they were beloved, becoming more than supporting parts of the stories.

The same can be said for the main companions. As the co-stars, and the trusted confidants of the Doctor, they have quite the impact on virtually every episode. Their interactions with the Doctor, and their personalities, can make or break an episode. The right combination is magical, but the wrong mix can be disastrous.

And so, as we wait for Series Ten and the eventual debut of Bill as the Doctor’s next companion, E! News decided to take a look back at those who traveled with the Doctor over these past nine seasons. Atop their list of best companions were Amy and Rose, which is hardly a surprise.

Where the surprises come in are in the middle of the list. Fan favorite Captain Jack was only ranked fourth, despite his overwhelming popularity and the unique feel that he gave the show. Donna Noble, who may well be the most tragic character in the new incarnation, ranked third. Personally, as Donna was my favorite of the new companions, I was glad to see her ranked so highly, but it is still surprising.

And what of Clara, the recently departed companion? She ranked sixth, squarely in the middle. This may be the best place for her, given the polarizing nature of her companion. Likewise, her shift in personality between Series Eight and Nine make her a complex being, and one who is not so easily placed inside of a box… even a blue police one.
