Doctor Who: Steven Moffat Makes Vague Announcement Regarding Changes to Show

According to Steven Moffat, not only has the next companion on Doctor Who been cast, but there will be major changes to the feel of the show in Series Ten.

One had to imagine that, when a new companion was eventually cast on Doctor Who, the feel of the show would change. Instead of being the darker Series Nine, which played to Peter Capaldi’s strengths, the upcoming season may well focus on the new companion, letting whoever it is shine in the spotlight. According to Steven Moffat, that will end up being the case.

Of course, there are not many details being circulated about this new companion, aside from the fact that one has been chosen. In fact, one does not even know if this new companion will be male or female, human or alien. However, Moffat did tease that the new companion will not be a sidekick in the way that other companions had been, and instead will be either the lead role or, at the very least, a co-lead.

More from Doctor Who

In a way, this almost sounds as though Moffat is reprising Series Eight all over again. That season, the first with Capaldi, has the unfortunate distinction of being known as the Clara Oswald Show, with the focus seemingly shifted towards the former companion, as opposed to the new (at the time) Doctor. While Series Eight had promise, the decision to focus on Clara fell flat, leading to that season being considered the worst in the NuWho era.

Perhaps Moffat and the writers learned from their mistakes when it comes to focusing a series on the companion. Perhaps, with a second chance at the same concept, the show will do a better job of focusing on this new companion without leaving the Doctor behind. However, if this is truly going to be Capaldi’s final season on Doctor Who, it is odd that they would chose this point to change the focus and the feel of the show.

Doctor Who is constantly evolving and changing as new Doctors and companions appear. However, if the changes are simply a rehashing of previous ideas that fell flat, then perhaps these changes should not be made. After all, there is no need to fix something that does not need to be fixed, or, in this case, changed.
