Doctor Who: A Truly Impressive Dalek Creation

Doctor Who, with its impressive longevity, has a way of being able to unite multiple generations with a unique bond. For one Cambridge teenager, the show, and the Daleks, were a way to connect with his grandfather.

Since 1963, we have been fortunate enough to be graced by the Doctor’s presence. Over those years, multiple generations have been able to enjoy the Doctor’s adventures, commiserating as his companions depart and thrilling to his journeys. Even his enemies, such as the Daleks and Weeping Angels, have built a strong following of their own.

Given that history, it may not be a surprise that different generations would be able to bond together over the show. Hence, 16 year old James Sutton, a student at Cambridge Regional College, worked with his grandfather, who was recovering from surgery, to build his own Dalek to help a friend’s social media project.

Unlike the mechanical monsters that the Daleks were designed to be, this reproduction only has one electronic device – the synthesizer needed to produce an accurate voice. Otherwise, the creature, which took ten months to create, is moved by walking or running, instead of using wheels and a motor. With a functional head and proper voice, it is truly a stunning creation, and one that certainly attracts notice when roaming the streets.

This is not Sutton’s first foray into building his own items from Doctor Who. In the past, he created various sonic screwdrivers, and stated that he wants to build a classic Cyberman as his next project. If successful, it would give his Dalek some company, as the creation is kept in the family garage.

It is truly amazing what fans of Doctor Who have been able to create over the years. If these projects can not only help out with other ventures, and can help different generations bond together, that is even better.
