Doctor Who: All in the Family

Doctor Who’s Second Doctor Patrick Troughton’s grandson, Harry Melling, is interested in playing the Doctor one day.

The most well known dynasty amongst people who work on Doctor Who is the Fifth Doctor Peter Davison’s daughter, Georgia Moffett, playing Jenny, the Doctor’s daughter, on Doctor Who, and then marrying her co-star, the Tenth Doctor David Tennant.

Another famous offspring of an actor who portrayed the Doctor is Sean Pertwee, son of Third Doctor Jon Pertwee. Greatly resembling his father, there has been much speculation if he would ever take up the iconic role. He has stated, however, that he does not wish to do so. We did get to see him dressed in a Third Doctor Halloween costume, as well as playing himself in the very amusing The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot.

Another descendant of a Doctor has recently made the news. At the age of nearly twenty seven, Harry Melling has already been in the acting game for quite some time. He has been famous since the age of ten, best known for his breakout role of Dudley Dursley, Harry Potter’s spoiled and bullying cousin in the Harry Potter movie franchise. According to Daily Express, Melling has expressed interest in following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Second Doctor Patrick Troughton, in playing the Doctor on Doctor Who.

"I would love to be the next new Doctor. . . . I am not the person in charge of that but I would love to keep it in the family. . . . It probably won’t happen as I might need to be a bit older. I’ve really enjoyed doing theatre but getting Doctor Who in the family again would be great."

More from Doctor Who

Melling is not new to working in the world of Doctor Who. He played Hervey in the The Whispering Forest, an audio serial produced by Big Finish. His uncles, David and Michael Troughton, have also officially been a part of the franchise. David appeared in various roles in televised episodes during the Second, Third, and Tenth Doctor’s runs, and did voice work for both Big Finish and AudioGO. Michael has also done Big Finish work, and played Albert Smithe in ‘Last Christmas.’

Another Doctor Who/Harry Potter connection is through Alfred Enoch. He played Dean Thomas in the Harry Potter movies and his father is William Russell, who played Ian Chesterton on Doctor Who.

Considering the title of this article, I could not resist researching actors who has been on both Doctor Who and All in the Family. Lo and behold, I found John Brandon, who played both the American sergeant in Doctor Who‘s ‘The Tenth Planet: Episode 1′ and a police officer in All in the Family‘s ‘Edith’s 50th Birthday.’
