Doctor Who to Have Full Season for Series Ten

It is interesting that, considering we are about halfway through Series Nine of Doctor Who, there is a great deal of speculation in regards to Series Ten. Perhaps it is due to the cuts that the BBC had to make earlier in the year, but one of the more persistent rumors involving Series Ten is that Doctor Who will not have a full season. Most recently, there was a rumor that next season would be halved, to allow Peter Capaldi time to work on other projects.

Well, according to Capaldi, those rumors are completely wrong. In an interview posted on the BBC News Twitter account, Capaldi stated that Series Ten will continue as a full season, such as we have come to expect. Indeed, the rumors of the demise of Doctor Who have been greatly exaggerated.

In a way, one can understand why such rumors would come into existence. Steven Moffat has other projects, notably Sherlock, that he is working on. Capaldi, who already had an impressive resume before becoming the Twelfth Doctor, has undergone a rebirth as a new generation of fans have come to appreciate his talents. There would be a demand for his abilities elsewhere. Add in the departure of Jenna Coleman and those layoffs, and one could easily picture the show as being in a state of flux.

Yet, these rumors never made much sense. Why would the BBC, if they are having financial difficulties, limit the amount of programming put forth by a show that has become a true phenomenon? Perhaps more than any other program they have in their current rotation, Doctor Who is able to bring in revenue for the network.

More from Doctor Who

In the end, this speculation that Series Ten will be shortened appears to be much ado about nothing. Capaldi has essentially squashed those rumors, especially as he stated that he was contracted for a full season. Given how much obvious joy he has in being the Doctor, and his love of the show in general, it is difficult to think that he would give up a full series easily.

It was also strange to suggest that a series that will feature numerous changes would have been shortened. There will be a new companion, and the Doctor will have to grapple with the loss of someone who has truly become indispensable to him. The Doctor had just started to open up and relax – how will he be affected by Clara’s death?

Series Ten, once it happens, certainly will have a lot of intrigue. Fortunately, it will be a full season of Doctor Who.
