Doctor Who: Maisie Williams to Return in ‘Face the Raven’

Following her appearances in ‘The Girl Who Died’ and ‘The Woman Who Lived,’ the door was seemingly left wide open for Maisie Williams’ character Ashildr/The Knightmare/Me to return. Now we know that she will indeed make at least one more appearance this year: in episode 10, ‘Face the Raven.’

The episode was written by Sarah Dollard, a former writer for Being Human who is making her Doctor Who debut. Dollard was a guest at MCM London Comic Con, alongside showrunner Steven Moffat, writer Mark Gatiss, and Series 8/9 finale director Rachel Talalay. According to Blogtor Who, after some apparent prompting from Moffat, Dollard revealed that Maisie Williams will return in ‘Face the Raven.’ Dollard took to Twitter later that day to express how difficult it’s been to keep that particular secret:

As far as we know, ‘Face the Raven’ and it’s preceding episode, ‘Sleep No More,’ represent the only two episodes this year that don’t constitute a two-part story. ‘Sleep No More’ was written by Mark Gatiss and is a “found footage” episode featuring a futuristic space station. ‘Face the Raven’ is set in modern-day London and features the return of Rigsy, the graffiti artist played by Joivan Wade in last year’s ‘Flatline.’ It’s said to involve “hidden streets” not on any map.

Here’s how Steven Moffat described ‘Face the Raven’ to Radio Times:

"Have you ever found yourself in a street you’ve never seen before? The next day, could you not find that street again? You weren’t dreaming. Your memory isn’t playing tricks. Like many lost souls throughout the ages, you have stumbled on an extraordinary secret – be grateful you survived it. The Doctor and Clara, with their old friend Rigsy, find themselves in a secret alien world, folded away among the streets of London. Not all of them will get out alive. One of the three intruders must face the raven…"

It’s been clear that the immortal Ashildr will continue to have lasting consequences for the Doctor, and this news no doubt furthers that belief. How does she fit into the “hybrid” prophecy revealed by Davros earlier this year? Time will tell.
