David Tennant, Jenna Coleman, Matt Smith: Previews & News on Upcoming Projects

These days, Doctor Who can be seen as something of a launching pad for an actor’s career, with many former stars keeping busy since their departure from the venerable show. This week saw an avalanche of news regarding upcoming films and television shows from former Doctors David Tennant and Matt Smith, as well as the next project from current companion Jenna Coleman.

Up first is the official full-length trailer for Marvel’s Jessica Jones, the upcoming Netflix series starring Krysten Ritter and David Tennant. Ritter stars as the title character, a former super hero-turned-private eye. Tennant is Kilgrave, the evil psychopath who broke Jones psychologically and forced her out of the hero game, but has returned to menace her once more.

The Tenth Doctor actor is only actually seen briefly in the trailer, but his voice and presence very much permeate the proceedings:

The entire first season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones will premiere on Netflix on November 20.

Next is another trailer, this time for the latest movie to star Eleventh Doctor actor Matt Smith. Last seen in this summer’s Terminator: Genisys, Smith co-stars with his real-life girlfriend Lily James in the upcoming big screen adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Based on writer Seth Grahame-Smith’s twisted 2009 take on the Jane Austen classic, Matt Smith plays the clergyman, Mr. Collins.

Smith is in a supporting role here, so he’s only seen for a moment in this first full-length trailer, but there’s plenty of other great zombie ass-kicking to enjoy:

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies will be released in February 2016 in the United States, United Kingdom, and Ireland.

Finally, we have our first official image and news from Jenna Coleman’s new ITV series, Victoria. Last month, Coleman made the (mostly) anticipated announcement that she was leaving Doctor Who and had, in fact, already filmed her last scenes. As rumored, she also confirmed she would be taking on the lead role as Queen Victoria in the epic new eight-part historical drama, due to begin filming this month. Now, we have our first look at Jenna Coleman in costume as England’s second-longest reining monarch:

In addition, ITV has announced the supporting cast for Victoria, and it includes a couple of surprises. Rufus Sewell (Dark City, The Man in the High Castle) will co-star as Victoria’s first Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne. Coleman will also be joined by two other Doctor Who veterans, as Torchwood‘s Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper) will play Mrs. Jenkins, the Queen’s senior dresser, and The Sarah Jane Adventures‘ Tommy Lawrence-Knight (Luke Smith) will appear as hall boy, Brodie.

Victoria is expected to premiere on ITV sometime in 2016.

It’s always great to see talented actors from the world of Doctor Who taking on new projects, and these three are among the most excited and anticipated for both casual and diehard fans alike. We’ll have more on these and any other major projects as they develop.
