The Twelfth Doctor’s Sonic Sunglasses Will Make a Return on Class
By David Hill
Love them or hate them, the sonic sunglasses fit the Twelfth Doctor perfectly. Based on a photo from Class, it appears as though they are back.
Every Doctor has their specific look. From the astrakhan of the First Doctor, to the Fourth Doctor’s scarf, right through to the Eleventh Doctor’s love of a bow tie and fez, every Doctor had their own personalized fashion accessories. Some may have been more quirky than others, such as wearing celery or raiding the Riddler’s closet, but each outfit was distinctive in its own way.
For the Twelfth Doctor’s entire first season, he did not have a particular article of clothing to call his own. He eventually began wearing a hooded sweatshirt under a long coat, but that is a bit too generic for the “Punk Rock” Doctor. He needs something that really makes a bold statement.

Solution: sonic sunglasses. They are an interesting item in that they proved to be controversial amongst fans even though they perfectly fit this incarnation of the Doctor. They were destroyed in ‘The Girl Who Died,’ only to return intact in the very next episode. These glasses, like their Doctor, are tough and do not give a damn what you think.
According to a tweet by Class’ official account, the sunglasses now appear to be back once again. Even though the Twelfth Doctor received a new sonic screwdriver, having something in reserve just in case that item is again lost certainly makes a great deal of sense. Those sunglasses, while seemingly benign in nature, could make a nice contingency plan against any of his innumerable enemies. They have already proven to be a sneakily useful device.
Of course, they may only be back for the Doctor’s appearance in Class, and not appear again in Doctor Who itself. Depending on how the Doctor presents himself during the episode, those sunglasses could just be part of his disguise, a simple fashion statement that is so much more. We are willing to bet, however, that they are likely to not only play a bigger role, but are also here to stay for at least the remainder of Peter Capaldi’s run as the Doctor.
