New Doctor Who Series 9 episode titles, Mission: DALEK contest, Paternoster Gang, AL Kennedy is against a female Doctor, Capaldi hints at an exit, & more!

Good morning, Doctor Who Watchers!

We’re officially less than a month away from the premiere of Doctor Who Series 9 on September 19! Yesterday here at DWW we had even more details on the new series, including the release of two new episode titles.

More from Doctor Who

Peter Capaldi meanwhile has kicked up quite a bit of dust with comments he made to The Daily Mirror this week, seeming to indicate he may be leaving Doctor Who in the near future. It was an off-the-cuff remark, so I’m loathe to give it a lot of weight, but one does have to consider the physical nature of Doctor Who. Capaldi is 57 now (which is by no means old), but playing the Doctor requires a lot more running and action these days when compared to the classic series. Not to mention the nearly year-round press tours and conventions. I can easily see how that would get tiring, especially for an actor who’s already had a decades-long career.

Also here at Doctor Who Watch, we’ve got details on BBC’s new Mission DALEK contest and a rebuttal to a piece one of our writers penned last week in favor of ditching the Paternoster Gang for good.

From around the internet, we’ve got an article about author AL Kennedy (who wrote the recently released Doctor Who novel, The Drosten’s Curse), in which she emphatically states that she is against a woman ever playing the Doctor. We’ve also got an absolute must-read from Doctor Who TV; contributor Matthew Adams ponders how the Doctor Who universe would be different if the Dalek emperor never created the Cult of Skaro. It’s an amazing read — you’d be surprised how much the life of one Dalek makes all the difference!

First, here are this morning’s top stories from here at Doctor Who Watch:

Doctor Who Still Needs the Paternoster Gang – J.R. Frontera

"Last week, one of my fellow Doctor Who Watchers posited that there was no need for a return of the Paternoster Gang in Series 9 … or beyond. As a fan of the trio, my initial reaction was, of course, “How dare you say such a thing!”However, the logic behind his statement is not all that flawed. His main arguments are that the interaction between the Gang and the Doctor seems to have “hit a lull” and that Madam Vastra is too strong of a character to work well alongside the Doctor (one could say, especially alongside Peter Capaldi’s Twelve, who is a much more rigid character than Matt Smith’s Eleven)."

And here are the top Doctor Who articles from around the internet:

What Difference Would One Dalek Make? – Doctor Who TV

"One of the main overarching themes of New Who is the Time War. So I was just thinking, what would happen if you’d remove a pretty important New Who character from that timeline. Specifically I wondered: what would happen if the Dalek Emperor had died before he created the Cult of Skaro. How would the Whoniverse look?"

Doctor Who ‘should never be played by a woman’, says novelist AL Kennedy – The Guardian

"Speaking at the Edinburgh international book festival, Kennedy said: “As a heterosexual woman, I have no interest in a female Doctor. He’s kind of got a guy vibe, the Doctor. A hopeless, undomestic, dozy, dreamy guy-type of eccentricity. It’s not a girl-type of eccentricity. I’d be surprised if he changed gender.”"

Peter Capaldi hints he will soon be leaving Doctor Who – Metro

"Speaking to The Daily Mirror newspaper, he said: ‘I sort of enjoy this position I am in with a kind of deep Scottish melancholy because I know it has to end one day. I will cross that bridge when we come to it, which may be sooner rather than later.’"
