A new Doctor Who Series 9 trailer & poster released, more Tennant return rumors, Trial of a Time Lord, no more Paternosters, Vastra/Jenny wedding, and more!

Good Thursday morning, all!

No doubt about it, the top Doctor Who story today is the surprise release of a new Series 9 trailer yesterday. It’s a bit shorter than the first one but boasts at least twice as much content:

It was all the buzz both here at Doctor Who Watch and all across the internet. We’ll have a full scene-by-scene breakdown posted later today.

Less widely reported, though, was the simultaneous release of a new Series 9 poster yesterday:

Pretty cool, right? I mean, technically we’ve seen this image before, but the three-dimensional logo sitting on the ground next to the Doctor is striking and new. I’m not so sure about that slogan: “Space and Time to Join the Adventure.” I get what they’re doing there, but I can’t say I’m in love with it.

More from Doctor Who

Our other top stories here at Doctor Who Watch include new details on David Tennant‘s rumored return in the Series 9 finale, part two of our look back at ‘The Trial of a Time Lord,’ and why Doctor Who needs a break from the Paternoster Gang.

From elsewhere around the internet, we’ve got a look at what the possible 2016 hiatus would mean for Doctor Who, a great long-form profile of former showrunner Russell T. Davies, a televised Vastra/Jenny-inspired wedding, and a review of the first issue in Titan Comics‘ epic Four Doctors crossover.

First up, here’s a look at the top stories here at Doctor Who Watch and across the FanSided network:

UPDATE: David Tennant in Doctor Who Series 9 Finale? New Clues – Barry Rice, Doctor Who Watch

"So what’s the big deal? The Doctor Who Twitter and Instagram accounts post photos like this all the time. Well, this image confirms a few things. First, there was a table read for the Series 9 finale that took place last week. That means, regardless of any scheduled location shooting, the cast would have been back at the BBC Wales studios at Cardiff Bay — not far from where Tennant and Davies were spotted."

Doctor Who: The Trial of a Time Lord REVISITED (Parts 5 – 8) – James Aggas, Doctor Who Watch

"The return of Sil from ‘Vengeance on Varos’ is a great start. Sil has always stuck out from other Doctor Who villains in that he’s not obsessed with taking over the universe or killing everyone. In fact, Sil is very much a villain of the 80s – his only concern is profit. If it’s to be made from the suffering or deaths of innocent lives, he won’t care one bit, so long as it’s made. In some ways, he almost seems like a natural precursor to the Slitheen, except with a much more repulsive laugh and without as many fart jokes."

No Paternoster Gang in Series 9? Good – Kory Plockmeyer, Doctor Who Watch

"While I think that their relationship with the Doctor and his companions reached new storytelling heights in ‘Deep Breath,’ particularly with Vastra’s flirtatious attitude toward Clara and Jenny’s jealousy, their interactions with the Doctor seem to have hit a lull. Moffat seems to know it, too – the Paternoster Gang and the Doctor have very little direct interaction; only Clara has any meaningful dialogue with the trio. Strax has become largely one-dimensional and offers little more to the episode than a few one-liners."

The Man Who Would Be King: Russell T Davies – Kasterborous

"And what did this TV god crave the most, and arguably put his career on hiatus to resurrect? Doctor Who. Yes, think about that a little longer. Aside from the just released Cucumber, Russell won’t have worked on anything that has seen the light of day and hasn’t been a part of the Whoniverse for 12 years. I personally regret that hugely, but nonetheless, it’s a fact. I also wonder what would have happened if the US TV movies with Tennant and Piper, planned for post Series 4 but pulled in favour of a soft Moffatt reboot had transpired? He’d still be showrunner today, one of the fascinating ‘what ifs’ of NuWho."

BBC airs lesbian lizard ‘Doctor Who’ wedding – PinkNews

"Modelled around fictional couple from the Doctor Who universe, Madame Vastra and Jenny Flint – a Silurian lizard warrior and her Victorian wife – the couple got hitched in “cosmic costumes”.Mum Julie said: “[It’s] a bit worrying as to what they might actually put in.”Rory (8) and Louis (9) gave exactly what the Doctor ordered, completely Who-ifying every aspect of the wedding – including the cake, the venue, the transport (TARDIS of course) and the entertainment."
